Embracing Natural Hair

Embracing Natural Hair

What is embracing natural hair, what does it mean?

Embracing natural hair means accepting and loving your hair in its God-given state. It’s about recognizing the beauty in its texture free from relaxers and straighteners. Since cutting my hair, I’ve also come to realize that it means proudly wearing it out, even when it’s short because it’s still beautiful, bold, and a reflection of who I am.

How to embrace your natural hair

1) Acceptance

To truly accept and appreciate the unique beauty of natural hair, you must first believe that your hair is already beautiful and enough just as it is. God made no mistakes when he made you. The pressure to conform to society’s beauty standards may try to convince us to hide or change the way our hair looks, but that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it. Your natural hair is a reflection of beauty, a unique identity, and divine intention.

2) Unlearning what society has taught us

You need to unlearn everything you were taught to believe about your hair from a young age. We were told it’s difficult and unruly. That it needs to be tamed with relaxers to fit in or straightened relentlessly to meet a narrow definition of beauty. But those were lies shaped by systems that never saw the brilliance of our roots. Natural hair is not a problem to fix. It's bold, beautiful, and powerful just as it is.

3) Learning how to care for your natural hair

Getting to know your hair is a vital part of embracing its beauty. Understanding your unique texture allows you to care for it intentionally. It will help you know how to moisturize, protect, and nourish it in the way it truly needs. With the right routine, your hair can grow, thrive, and flourish exactly as it was meant to.

Lastly

Always remember, your hair is beautiful just as it is. No matter the length, the shape, whether shrunken or stretched, coily, kinky, or even 4Z. It’s a crown of uniqueness, a symbol of your strength, beauty and identity. You are wonderfully and fearfully made by God and that truth shines through every strand.
